The Phat Ducks are a bunch of ordinary, thirty-something women (ok, what’s a decade between friends?!) who love to eat, drink and quack a lot. These eight friends first came together at a lunch to commemorate a birthday, where over countless bottles of chardonnay, ideas flowed, tongues flapped and bellies ached from laughter. By the end of that day, not wanting it to end, the girls had hatched an ingenious scheme that would allow them to repeat that first wonderful experience every single month.
And the “Phat Ducks” were born.
Basically their plan was this: go to a new restaurant in the region every month, and
take the time to discuss the food, wine,
service and general ambiance. Take a note
of their favourite dishes and drinks and write
it up in a friendly review that would be published in the next issue of their local magazine “The Lennox Wave” (whose publisher just happened to be one of them).
And so, the Phat Ducks column began to appear in The Lennox Wave – providing local
businesses with a bit of a plug and
giving readers a table-side peek into
the Duckie’s ditsy dining deeds. Within
6 months it was one of the most popular sections of the magazine and the talk of the town. Local women were virtually crawling over each other to join the
flock, whose membership was closed and whose identities remained a (reasonably) closely guarded secret.
After two years the Ducks had travelled the length and breadth of the Northern Rivers Region, tasting and sipping their way through some of the most delicious dishes, at some of the best eating houses in Australia. Inadvertently they had blazed a trail across the countryside, sampling fresh local produce, and tasting the signature dishes of some truly great chefs.
This is the record of their journey and a selection of their favourites from the restaurants where the Phat Ducks ate.
